What is the purpose of TCAS?

The primary purpose of the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is to prevent mid-air collisions between aircraft. TCAS functions by monitoring the airspace around an airplane for other transponder-equipped aircraft. It uses the data it collects to determine if there is a risk of collision.

When TCAS detects that another aircraft is on a potential collision course, it generates alerts for the flight crew. These alerts include visual indications and audio warnings, advising pilots of necessary maneuvers to maintain safe separation from the other aircraft. This system is critical for enhancing aviation safety, particularly in congested airspaces where multiple aircraft operate in close proximity.

While measuring altitude is essential for navigation and other functions, and while enhancing landing approaches is crucial for safe landings, these functionalities are separate and do not constitute the primary role of TCAS. Its focus remains firmly on collision avoidance, making it an indispensable tool in modern aviation safety protocols.
